Why should young people participate in
elections?
“The only way to
democracy is if citizens young and old are active participants in elections.
The young people have become apathetic and cynical at the way politicians
conduct their business. Corruption and hypocrisy have become so common causing
the youth to stop participating in elections. The youth constitute 66% of the
population, meaning that if they vote they can do away with notorious leaders
and place those that they think will fully represent them.” Kudzai Sibanda.
“When
politicians know in advance that most young people do not vote, they may be
less interested in making the effort to be responsive to issues that matter to
the young Zimbabweans.” Maria Shiri.
“Young
people should participate in elections because it is their right to vote.
Voting is a fundamental right accorded to all citizens above the age of 18.” Chipo Ndlovu.
“Young
people need to vote because they need to be concerned about the economy. The
economy will determine how easy or difficult it is to find a job, to get health
care, which most young people are without or to get an education which has
become very expensive and might end up being for the elite. If young people
mobilise and speak with one voice about these issues, then they will be heard.”
Mervin Sithole.
